Howard BainHoward Bain has served as director of Nanometrics since April 2008. Mr. Bain has over 35 years of board-level oversight and financial management experience in the high technology and semiconductor manufacturing industries, with capabilities that extend to all areas of corporate finance, operations, internal controls and procedures for compliance with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 and public company financial reporting and accounting. Mr. Bain has served as Chief Financial Officer of several publicly-held technology companies, including Portal Software, Vicinity, Informix and Symantec. He currently serves as a director on the boards of Learning Tree International, PGP Corporation, Turin Networks and eCivis. Mr. Bain holds a B.S. in Business from California Polytechnic University and qualifies as an independent director and an audit committee financial expert under the rules of the Securities and Exchange Commission promulgated under the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002.
Michael BatesMichael Bates currently serves as director and audit committee chairman for BARRX Medical and Satiety, Inc. and is an active angel investor through the Band of Angels and Life Science Angels. He has more than 27 years of experience in corporate financial management, including 17 years in the life science and medical technology industries. Mr. Bates contributed to successful investor outcomes at his last four companies, all of which were sold at premium valuations and generating high rates of return for their investors. Mr. Bates joined St. Francis Medical Technologies in 2005 as its chief financial officer. St. Francis was a medical device company developing a minimally invasive device and procedure to treat lumbar spinal stenosis, a degenerative spine disease. St. Francis was sold to Kyphon Inc. in January 2007 for $725 million. Mr. Bates previously served as vice president of finance and administration, CFO, for Silicon Genetics, a bioinformatics company from April of 2000 through to its sale to Agilent Technologies in October 2004. During 1999, Mr. Bates served as vice president of finance and CFO for Collagen Aesthetics Inc., a publicly-traded medical device company that was sold to Inamed Corporation in 1999. From 1995 to 1998, Mr. Bates held leadership positions at Penederm Incorporated, a publicly-traded specialty pharmaceutical company focused on dermatology and topical drug delivery technologies. Mr. Bates served as Penederm's vice president of finance and administration and CFO when it was sold at a premium valuation to Mylan Laboratories in 1998. Mr. Bates currently serves as a board member of the Northern California Chapter of the Association of Bioscience Finance Officers (ABFO) and previously served as its chairman. ABFO provides a forum for the senior financial executives of more than 100 Bay Area life science companies to discuss business and financial issues related to the industry. Mr. Bates is a certified public accountant (inactive), having begun his career at Deloitte and Touche LLP, and has also held positions at Tandem Computers Inc. He is a graduate of California State University at Hayward and received an MBA in Finance from the University of California at Berkeley.
Tom CampbellTom Campbell was a leading executive search consultant at the Menlo Park, CA office of Heidrick & Stuggles since 1980, and led the office before his retirement in 2006. Under his leadership, the Menlo Park office became the largest office for the firm outside of New York City. During his 26 years with the firm, he conducted hundreds of "C" level searches and coached other consultants on hundreds more. Tom leads a very active retirement and splits his time between his home in Carmel where is on the Board of Directors of the water district, and his home in Atherton. Tom earned his BA in liberal arts from Colorado College and built his career at Wells Fargo Bank and Safeco Insurance. Tom is an invaluable asset to Arnold Partners and our clients. Dave Crivelli is the Vice President of Human Resources for Orbotech, a global supplier of flat panel test and repair equipment. He has 30 years of Human Resource and Business Management experience in semiconductor device, semiconductor equipment and the flat panel display equipment industries. He is a proven human resource, organizational development and management expert in emerging technologies and start up companies as well as Fortune 500 multinational organizations. His expertise includes executive management development and coaching, succession planning, organizational design for high performance teams, and culture design for multinational organizations. Dave has extensive experience in setting up Asian organizations and bridging cultural differences between Western and Eastern norms and values. He has hired and trained high performance teams throughout the world and has developed problem solving techniques that have become standards throughout the industry. Dave’s career includes executive positions with Applied Materials, Novellus Systems, Advanced Micro Devices, as well as numerous technology start ups in the United States and Asia. Dave received his BA in Liberal Arts at Bowling Green State University and completed his graduate studies there in 1978.
